The Google Wave: A Transformational Innovation?

Google wave is an open sourced, shared, hosted service that marries the features of e-mail, instant messaging, Google Docs and Wikis for collaboration and multi user, simultaneous or asynchronous content creation, editing and comments. it easily interfaces with social networking site, blogs wikis, microblogs and many other social media tools. Google wave handles text, photos, graphics and videos. In the future, it will handle presentations and spreadsheets. It has improved spellcheck and language translation capabilities. The Wave operates in a browser.

Google has elected to go open sources on this innovation. This has several implications. Google wants software developers to build applications for the Wave. And, they are encouraging competitive Wave systems that are compatible with Google's Wave. And, to me, an important implication is that they have build a software system for collaboration that supports the concept of open collaboration. The design embodies the very principle they are trying to promote. The project has values congruency.

This is a transformational innovation. It appears to solve many of the problems associated with the current collaboration tools. However, I don't remember any mention of integrating RSS feeds. It's also likely a disruptive innovation. It's likely to change the face of web 2.0 industry (if it can be called that).

People who have not learned how to use blogs, wikis and Google docs for collaboration are now going to be two generations behind the curve.

Now if we can just figure out how to get people to participate in open collaboration.

About Google Wave

Google Wave is a new model for communication and collaboration on the web, coming later this year.

Here's a preview of just some of the aspects of this new tool.

What is a wave?

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.
